Bylined articles pitched against trade publications' themed issue calendars, in titles that have editors rather than price lists.

About this service

We place bylined articles in trade magazines, association journals and standards-body publications: titles with a named editor, a published editorial calendar and no price list. That excludes most of what a placement service will show you. For a manufacturer or a carrier the workable list runs to somewhere between twenty-five and forty titles across two or three languages, and it is worked over a publishing year rather than a month. The list: Built for your company and shown to you before anything is pitched, with the reason each title is on it and the reason the obvious ones are not. Sector magazines, the journals of the associations you already pay dues to, technical bulletins from standards bodies and certification houses, the departmental publications of universities where you fund research, and the two or three general business desks that cover your sector seriously rather than occasionally. We mark which titles we have placed in before and which we have not. Working the calendar: Industrial trade titles publish themed issues a year ahead: a March issue on hydrogen storage, a September issue on cold chain, an annual buyer's guide with a fixed copy deadline. A pitch that reaches the editor commissioning that issue six to eight weeks before its deadline is a different transaction from a cold pitch in an empty week. Most of the planning time in this engagement goes on reading those calendars, and the queue is agreed with you quarterly. What editors accept: One argument, held by a named person who does the work, supported by something only your company knows. Editors here reject vendor material at the subject line and they are right to. The piece that lands is usually an engineer explaining why a common approach fails in a case the reader recognises, with the figures from that case. Your product may be named once, near the end, if the editor permits it. Several will not, and those are often the best titles on the list. Links, honestly: Some of these publications give a followed link in the author biography. Some mark it nofollow. Some print the byline and the company name and nothing more. We tell you which before pitching, and we still pitch the ones that give no link where the readership is right, because the engineers who write your equipment into a specification read them. If a followed link is the only thing being bought here, this is the wrong service, and a cheaper and worse one exists. Language: Italian for Italian titles, English for the rest, written in the language rather than translated into it. Where a translation is genuinely needed it goes to someone who works in the sector. A general translator turns a technical argument into something an editor can smell from the opening paragraph, and that editor remembers the byline. What we refuse: Any title with a "write for us" page quoting a fee, and any title whose contents are entirely contributed. Anchor text quotas, because the anchor is whatever the publication's style guide allows and that is nearly always the company name. Linking one client from an article written for another. Reprinting one article across several titles under changed headlines, which editors notice, share with each other and hold against you for a long time. Not for you if: You need a fixed number of placements per month for an internal report. Editorial calendars do not move for anyone's quarter, an accepted article can wait two issues for space, and a good editor kills things late. We commit to the pitching, the writing and the relationships that make the next pitch easier, not to a count. If the reporting line above you requires a count, say so on the first call and we will decline politely.
