Editorial Corrections That Earn In-Content Links

Out of roughly 60 existing pages I approach in a quarter, 7 to 11 get updated with a link. That rate holds because I am not asking anyone to insert a link. I am telling an editor their page is wrong, showing them exactly where, and giving them the source that fixes it. Most of what is sold under this name is a payment to a site owner who keeps a spreadsheet of their own pages and a price per insertion. Those pages carry six, ten, fourteen commercial outbound links, they have been bought by everyone in your category, and they are the first thing a manual reviewer recognises. I do not buy from those lists, and if you have been buying from them, tell me before we start rather than after. What makes a page a candidate: It states something that has since changed. In this market that is a long list. Articles citing EU textile labelling rules as they stood before the current revision. Pages quoting GOTS 6.0 requirements where 7.0 applies. Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 annex entries superseded by later amendments. Deforestation regulation dates written before the postponement moved them. Machinery directive references that became a regulation. A page that states a number which is now false belongs to an author who would rather know. How I qualify before writing to anyone: Screaming Frog in list mode across the candidate set for status, canonical, publication and modified dates. The Wayback CDX API to check whether the page has ever been edited after publication — a page untouched since 2016 will not be touched for you, whatever the owner says. An outbound link audit: more than a handful of commercial dofollow links in the body and the page comes off the list. Then a named author with a real contact address rather than a form. The email: Short, addressed to the person whose byline is on the page, naming the sentence, giving the current source, and saying what our page adds. Our page has to genuinely add something — a table, a comparison, a document nobody else has scanned. Where it does not, the correction goes out anyway without a link in it. That happens, and it is how the next email from me gets opened. The 90 and 180 day recheck: Insertions get removed. Site sold, CMS migration, new editor running a link sweep. I recheck every acquired link at 90 and 180 days and report what disappeared, with the date. Ask any provider of this service for their 180-day survival figure; the reluctance to give one tells you what you need to know. What is not included: No paid insertions, on any marketplace, at any price, including the ones that invoice it as a content update fee. No exact-match anchors: the anchor is whatever reads naturally in that editor's sentence, and better still if the editor writes it. No insertions into round-up posts whose only purpose is holding links. No work in languages I do not read — English and Italian, and I will not run this in German or Spanish through a translator, because a correction email in imperfect German is an insult, not a pitch. Who this is not for: Anyone who needs a fixed monthly number. The rate depends on how much of your category's published information has gone stale, which is a fixed quantity in a given quarter and not something effort increases. Also not for brands with no reference page worth linking to: if nothing on your site improves the corrected paragraph, build that first and come back to me afterwards.
