Strategy, Consulting and Training · International expansion advertising plan

Markets ordered by contribution after duty and returns, then an advertising plan written to that constraint rather than to search volume.

About this service

The number that decides most UK-to-Germany apparel expansions is the return rate, not the cost of the click. German apparel returns run close to half of orders against roughly a quarter to a third in the UK, on top of a fourteen-day statutory withdrawal right and a market that expects the seller to carry return postage. Put that into the contribution model before you put a euro into media and the market that looked like the obvious first move often drops to third. What we settle before there is a media plan: Landed cost per unit after duty, including whether your goods meet rules of origin under the UK-EU agreement or attract tariff because the fabric was woven outside the cumulation zone. Whether you ship under IOSS or DDU, and what DDU does to your refund rate when customers meet a courier handling fee at the door. The return leg, priced, per market. Local payment methods, because a German checkout without invoice payment or a Dutch checkout without iDEAL converts at a level no amount of media buying corrects. None of this is advertising work and all of it decides whether the advertising can pay. Choosing the market: We do not rank markets by search volume. We rank them by contribution per order after the items above, by how many credible incumbents already hold the buyer's consideration set, and by how much you must spend before a result is readable. A market you cannot afford to test at signal strength is not a market you have entered, it is a market you are subsidising. The output is an order, with the case for the market we placed second written out so you can overrule us knowingly. Kids and family markets: Advertising to children is not one rule. Sweden does not permit television advertising directed at under-twelves on domestic broadcasters. Quebec's Consumer Protection Act bars commercial advertising to under-thirteens outright, which is a Canada-entry problem people usually find after launch. Germany's youth media protection framework governs placement and scheduling. Age assurance and the handling of children's data change what you can run on paid social before they change your creative. We map this per market at plan stage and write the constraint into the channel plan rather than into a legal appendix nobody reads. Regulated products: Passporting from the UK has gone, so the first question for insurance is the authorised entity: your own, a fronting arrangement, or a local MGA. The answer sets your timeline more than any media decision does. Product oversight and governance under IDD determines which segments you may target, which quietly removes some of the audiences the acquisition model assumed. Where a client has no route to authorisation in a market, we say the plan is premature and stop, rather than write something that cannot be executed. The plan itself: Entry sequence by market with dates. Channel plan per market with the minimum spend that makes a result readable and the period over which it is read. Localisation depth per market: which markets need native copy and locally shot creative, which tolerate translation, and which need a different offer rather than a different language. A named point of failure per market with the trigger to withdraw. Not included: Media buying and account management. Translation vendor selection. Legal and regulatory advice; we tell you which questions to put to counsel and in what order, and we are not your lawyers. Entity formation, tax registration and logistics contracting. Not for you if: You want a plan covering five markets at once. We will write the case for one, occasionally three in sequence, and decline five. Or the decision to enter has already been taken and the plan is needed for a board paper, in which case you need a different kind of supplier.
