Server-side blocked rate weighted by the revenue those sessions would have earned, then the recovery path worth building, or the advice to build none.

About this service

Most publishers quote a blocked rate that is wrong twice over. Measured against server logs rather than a client script, Brazilian desktop audiences in crypto, gaming and developer content typically return 18 to 30 percent blocked sessions, while food, education and lifestyle traffic, which is overwhelmingly mobile, sits between 4 and 9 percent. The number that matters is neither: it is blocked sessions weighted by the revenue those sessions would have produced, and that figure usually lands 30 to 40 percent below the raw rate, because blockers cluster on desktop Chrome in categories and geographies with their own yield profile. We measure that before proposing anything, and on two engagements the weighted loss came back small enough that we recommended no recovery work at all. How the measurement is done: A first-party endpoint that filter lists cannot pattern-match, requested on a sampled share of pageviews and joined to your analytics at session level. Not a bait file named ads.js, which every list has caught for a decade and which produces a rate flattering enough that vendors enjoy quoting it. We report by template, device, browser and traffic source, so you can see plainly that the blocked audience is your most engaged one. It nearly always is, and that fact should shape what you do next more than the percentage does. The three recoveries, in the order we usually rank them: First, Acceptable Ads through a recovery vendor. Realistic recovery on the sites we have run it on is 15 to 40 percent of the weighted loss, depending on how much of your demand is eligible, and it costs a revenue share plus a first-party serving path somebody has to maintain when it breaks. Second, asking. A dismissible message with a measured bounce cost, which works on an audience with a relationship to the title and fails on search arrivals who have none. Third, and for crypto and developer readers usually the only one that compounds: stop trying to recover the ad and sell the reader something instead. Membership, a paid newsletter, a course. That audience has told you what it thinks of advertising and a modal will not change its mind. What we refuse: Detect-and-block walls. Germany's Federal Court of Justice found adblocking itself lawful in 2018, and the technical arms race has a poor record everywhere it has been fought. Rotating first-party domains to evade filter lists, which buys weeks and spends your domain reputation. Re-inserting ads for users whose consent state does not permit it, under TCF or under LGPD, because recovery does not create a legal basis and the ANPD is not the regulator to test that theory against. And any DOM obfuscation scheme that needs re-shipping every Chrome release, since you will be maintaining it, not us. Not included: Paywall engineering and subscription billing, if reader revenue is the path you choose. We design it and specify the vendor comparison; building it belongs to your engineering team or a subscriptions specialist. Stack work, refresh policy and direct sales pricing are separate engagements on this profile. Not for you if: You want a number for a deck. The measurement will most likely come back lower than the one you have been quoting, and the recovery estimate lower again. If a vendor has already told you a quarter of your revenue is being blocked and what you want is confirmation, we are the wrong people to read your logs. Also not for sites whose weighted blocked share is under about 5 percent, where the cost of this engagement exceeds a year of what recovery would return, and we would rather tell you that in the first call than in the invoice.
