Amazon Sponsored Products Run on Contribution Margin
Search Advertising (PPC / SEM) · Amazon Sponsored Products search ads
Sponsored Products rebuilt on per-ASIN contribution margin, with bid ceilings documented and reads matched to the seven-day attribution window.
About this service
Sponsored Products reports against a seven-day attribution window, so the Monday optimisation most accounts run is made partly on sales that have not landed yet. Bids come down on ad groups that were fine, and the account teaches itself a lie every week. The first thing this engagement changes is the reading interval. The second is that target ACOS stops being one number for the whole catalogue.
Structure follows contribution margin, not product hierarchy:
Break-even ACOS is your contribution margin after referral fee, fulfilment and returns, calculated per ASIN rather than per brand. Campaigns are split by what each ASIN can afford, which usually cuts across the way your catalogue is organised and always cuts across the way the account was inherited. A few ASINs are bought for rank at a deliberate loss with a written end date. Most are bought for profit at a ceiling. Where both sit inside one campaign, no bid change can be right for both halves of it.
The bid mechanics people get caught by:
A base bid, a top-of-search placement adjustment and a dynamic bidding rule compound on each other. Dynamic bids set to up and down can raise a bid substantially for a top-of-search slot, and the placement multiplier then applies on top. A bid you believe is one euro can clear at four. I set placement adjustments and bidding strategy as a single decision and document the resulting ceiling per campaign, so the number in the interface is the number you are actually exposed to.
Data plumbing, and when to skip it:
Amazon Marketing Stream delivers hourly performance through the Ads API into your own storage, and it earns the engineering above a certain order volume. Below roughly fifty orders a day the hourly series is noise with a monthly bill attached, and the search term report read fortnightly is the better instrument. I will say that rather than sell you the pipeline.
Smaller marketplaces:
Amazon.cz opened in October 2023 and its query volume is still thin. Search term harvesting that takes three weeks on the German marketplace takes a quarter there. It is a structural buy on a structural timeline, and running it on German cadence produces a stream of bid changes fitted to single orders.
Not included:
Listing copy, A+ content, images, and everything else that determines conversion rate after the click. I will tell you when the ad account is not your problem, and on a first look it often is not. Sponsored Display, Sponsored Brands video and DSP. Brand Registry applications, account health, suspension appeals and case work with Seller Support.
Who this is not for:
Sellers whose contribution margin cannot survive an ACOS in the twenties on the ASINs they most want ranked. Advertising accelerates that arithmetic, it does not repair it, and I will show you the number before taking the engagement rather than after. Anyone wanting a daily bid report: I read this account on a schedule matched to its attribution window, and a daily report on seven-day data is a document about nothing. And agencies looking for a white-label operator, because every decision here is a margin decision and it needs the person who can approve it in the room.
What the fee actually buys:
A defensible target for each ASIN, a structure in which those targets can be pursued separately, and someone willing to tell your finance lead that a rank buy has run past its end date.
