About this service

The system of record is the warehouse: A CDP is a bus. Data moves through it; it does not live there. Every tracking plan I have inherited carried between 120 and 400 event names, of which fewer than 40 were read by anything downstream, and the profile store had quietly become the place people looked up customer facts. That is how two teams arrive at a meeting with different revenue numbers. So the build starts at the destination side and works backwards. Design order: First the reports and audiences your team actually opens, named specifically. Then the destinations that must receive data for those to work. Only then the events, defined as the minimum set those destinations require. This usually cuts a proposed tracking plan by more than half, and every event that survives has somebody's name against it. The tracking plan is enforced or it is a wish: Event names follow one convention chosen once: object then past-tense action, casing decided on day one and never mixed. Properties are typed, required flags declared, enumerations listed. The plan lives in Segment Protocols or the RudderStack data catalog and simultaneously as JSON Schema in your application repository, wired into CI so an event that violates it fails the pull request. Catching a violation in review costs minutes. Catching it in a dashboard six weeks later costs a quarter of trust in the numbers. Collection: Web through analytics.js behind a consent gate that blocks before consent rather than firing and hoping. Anything touching money goes server-side, because client-side purchase events under-report and the size of that gap is the whole argument. Mobile through the native SDKs where the app is part of the story. I will not install an SDK before the plan is signed, however much faster it would feel to start. Warehouse and activation: Snowflake, BigQuery or Postgres as the first destination, always. Modelling in dbt. Activation out of the warehouse through Hightouch to the surfaces that need it, whether that is Meta CAPI, Google Ads Customer Match, Klaviyo, HubSpot lists or Braze, so every audience has a definition in SQL that anyone can read and re-run. Audiences built inside a vendor profile UI cannot be reviewed, cannot be diffed, and leave with the contract. The bill: Segment prices on monthly tracked users, RudderStack on events. At real volumes those produce very different numbers, and the difference is usually the largest single line in the decision. I model both against twelve months of your actual traffic before recommending either, and I have talked clients out of the more expensive one more often than into it. Not included: Migrating historical events into a new tool as a first step; get the forward flow right and backfill later, if ever. Sending personal data to destinations that have no use for it. Twilio Engage, or any vendor profile store, as the source of truth for a figure a finance person will read. Consent management platform selection. Identity stitching, which is separate work with its own failure modes. Who this is not for: Teams with no warehouse and no intention of getting one. Without it, the CDP becomes the database it was never meant to be, and every question gets a slightly different answer depending on which tool you asked. Also not for teams who want implementation to start before the naming argument is settled, because the argument is the work and skipping it only moves the cost six months out.
