Paid editorial in games and sports media, negotiated on promotion terms, disclosed and rel=sponsored, measured on branded demand rather than links.

About this service

A sponsored article is a media buy, and pricing it as anything else is how buyers overpay. The sponsored attribute means the link carries no ranking signal, so a publisher offering to leave it followed is selling their own site's exposure to Google's site reputation abuse policy along with yours. Rate cards in games and sports media run from around 2,500 dollars at a vertical site to 45,000 dollars at a top-tier outlet with homepage promotion, and most of the negotiable value sits in the promotion rather than in the article. What you are buying: An audience that already trusts the masthead, distribution the publisher controls, and a page that answer engines quote later when somebody asks what your category is for. Branded search demand follows a good sponsored piece within about six weeks. Rankings do not, and I will not sell it to you as if they might. How the deal is negotiated: Against the promotion, never the price per word. The terms worth arguing over are how long the piece holds a homepage or section module, usually 48 hours and movable to a week; newsletter inclusion with a list size and open rate you can verify rather than take on trust; whether the article stays live permanently or expires after twelve months; whether it lives on a partner subfolder excluded from the sitemap; and whether the publisher will deliver page-level analytics afterwards instead of a screenshot. I ask for the previous quarter's average time on page for their sponsored slot before agreeing a number. What I write: The piece the publication's own readers would have finished. In games media that is usually a working post-mortem, with the numbers and the decision that went wrong in it. In sports it is more often a method: what a programme changed and what the change cost. Product copy comes out. Sign-off is one round with legal in the room, because the fourth round of brand edits is what turns a commissioned piece into an advertisement nobody reads to the end. Disclosure: Labelled above the fold, rel sponsored on every link back to you, and written to ASCI disclosure guidelines for Indian placements and the FTC endorsement guides for United States ones. Where a publisher offers to run it unlabelled or to slip the label below the fold, I withdraw the buy and tell you exactly what was offered. Not included: No followed links, on any outlet, at any price. No bundling a paid placement with a promise of editorial coverage, because that trade poisons the newsroom relationship you will want later. No placements onto the unrelated subfolders of national news domains, which is the arrangement Google has been issuing manual actions against since May 2024. No approval of a publisher's audience claims without their analytics behind them. Who this is not for: Buyers whose objective is a link. Buyers who need the piece to say something their own data does not support, since publishers in this sector fact-check sponsored copy more closely than most people expect. And iGaming, which I decline outright. How it is measured: Branded query impressions in Search Console for the 28 days before and after, direct traffic to the destination page, engaged sessions from the referral rather than raw clicks, the publisher's post-flight report set against what was sold, and a check at 60 days on whether the article surfaces when the category question is put to ChatGPT and Perplexity. Where a publisher underdelivers on module hours or newsletter placement, I take it up with their commercial team and get make-goods, which is ordinary practice in media buying and is almost never asked for by search teams.

What the seller needs from you

  1. 1Which publications are on the table, and do you have their current rate cards or media kits?

  3. 3What internal numbers can be published, and who signs off on them?
  4. 4Which regulator's disclosure rules apply to your market?
  5. 5Have you run paid placements before, and what did the post-flight reports show?

Asked at checkout. Delivery time starts once you answer, not when you pay.
