Topical authority: the build order before the money page
SEO and Organic Search · Topical authority / hub-and-spoke planning
A dated build order for one topic area: which pages must exist, in what sequence, before the commercial page has any chance of ranking — and which pages to cut.
About this service
Hub-and-spoke plans fail on sequencing more often than on topic choice. Ship the commercial page first and it spends two or three quarters ranking for nothing while the questions that surround the purchase get answered on domains you do not control. Across the topic areas we have planned since 2022, the ones built support-first reached a top-five position for the target term in a median of five months. The ones where the commercial page led took eleven. Same clients, same writers, different order. The order is what you are buying.
What arrives:
A build order for one topic area, dated against your real publishing capacity, in one sheet your editors can work from without anyone translating it for them. Each row names the page, the query set it is meant to own, the page type the current SERP is rewarding for that query, the internal links it carries at publication, the pages that must exist before it, and a stop condition: the measurement at which we recommend abandoning that page rather than iterating on it. Page type is decided by what is actually ranking today, which is often a comparison table or a calculator rather than the explainer that is easiest to commission.
The expensive decision:
Which pages you do not write. A plan typically cuts between a quarter and a third of what the client arrived with, usually the high-volume terms with no path to a purchase. Cutting them is what lets the rest ship on schedule. Every cut carries its reasoning, so you can overrule us with your eyes open, and overrules are marked in the sheet so nobody relitigates them in month four.
Who signs it:
Erik Sandell. Nine years as editorial director at a Swedish financial media group, responsible for what got commissioned and what did not, then two years planning topic areas for regulated fintech clients where the wrong page is a compliance problem rather than a wasted afternoon. He runs the SERP reads himself.
What we work from:
Live SERP reads for every target query, in the market and language you sell in, not a US result set with a country parameter attached. Your existing coverage, mapped by the queries it already earns impressions for. Competitor structures read for what they had to publish before their commercial page started ranking, which publication dates usually make visible. And your sales team's list of the questions that come up before a contract is signed, which beats any keyword tool for the middle of the plan.
Where we say no:
We do not plan topic areas for a team that cannot publish. If your realistic output is two pages a month and the sequence needs eighteen before the commercial page has support, we will tell you the plan is not fundable at that capacity and offer a narrower topic instead. We also decline health and medical topics where nobody credentialed will put their name on the page. Not as policy, but because those pages do not rank and we would be charging for a plan that cannot work.
Not included:
No article writing and no editing. No link acquisition. No CMS work and no schema implementation. We do not sell keyword research as a standalone deliverable either; the query data here exists to justify a sequence, and detached from the sequence it is worth less than what you would pay for it.
Do not buy this if:
You want a content calendar. A calendar says when to publish. This says what has to be true before a page can rank, which sometimes means publishing nothing for six weeks while three supporting pages get written properly. Skip it too if your commercial page is already in the top five for its term. You have the structure; what you need is a maintenance decision, not a plan.
Languages:
English and Swedish, each planned natively. A Swedish topic area translated from an English plan inherits the wrong SERP, and by the time that shows up in the numbers you have paid for a quarter of writing that cannot be fixed by editing.
