Rate and terms negotiation for host-read flights, plus the brief, the disclosure line and the read check on publication day.

About this service

Published podcast rate cards are an opening position. On a four-week host-read midroll flight we usually settle 20 to 35 percent under card, and the discount is rarely the part that matters. The terms decide whether the flight is recoverable when week two goes badly, and most in-house teams negotiate a rate hard and then inherit terms written entirely for the seller. What we negotiate after the price: A 30-day download guarantee with make-good taken in inventory rather than as a credit. A swap-out right, so that if the code is flat after two weeks the spend moves to another show in the same network without penalty; sellers concede this far more often than buyers ask. Approval turnaround written as 48 hours against a named individual, because the team will review is how a flight loses its first week. Repurposing rights for the host's read into paid social, priced and time-boxed separately, since this is the thing brands most often take without permission and the fastest way to lose a host permanently. First right of refusal on the next season, which costs nothing at signature and is worth a great deal when the show grows. And exclusivity written narrowly against you, broadly for you. The brief, not the script: We do not send hosts a script. A scripted host-read is a produced spot with a familiar voice on it and listeners hear the difference within four seconds. We send three facts the host can verify from their own experience, one line that must be said verbatim, which is the code and the offer and nothing else, and one line they must not say, usually a claim we cannot support. We require the host to record it themselves rather than accept a network voice dropped into the slot. Then we listen to the first read on publication day and check the mundane things: a code clear enough to be typed from memory, a URL with no hyphen in it, and a Turkish pronunciation of the brand that matches what people will actually type into search. Disclosure: Turkey's Reklam Kurulu requires paid content to be labelled plainly, and the guidance written for social influencers is the standard we hold podcast reads to. The disclosure sits at the top of the read in Turkish, not buried after the endorsement. For US shows we hold to the FTC endorsement guides in their 2023 form. We have walked away from hosts who wanted to soften it into 'my friends at', and we would do it again, because an undisclosed endorsement is a liability that outlives the flight by years. The number on the invoice is not the rate: Buying from a non-resident seller triggers 15 percent withholding under Presidential Decree 476, on top of the 7.5 percent digital services tax. A Turkish buyer comparing a US network's CPM against a local show's CPM without modelling that is comparing two different numbers. We build effective cost before the shortlist is closed, not after finance queries the invoice. What we refuse: Fees settled partly in product. Apparel sellers propose it in nearly every conversation and it ends in a gifting relationship, no measurement, and a host who reads like someone who feels underpaid. Negotiating against a host we have not heard read a competitor. Rescuing a badly signed contract with no fresh flight to renegotiate around. And briefing a read for a landing page we have not seen, because half of what fails in host-read fails on the page. Not for: Teams who want reads live this week. Good hosts are sold four to eight weeks out, and the ones with immediate availability are available for a reason.
