SEO and Organic Search · Backlink audit and disavow

An evidence-led decision on whether your profile needs a disavow at all, with the file and the reconsideration request when it does.

About this service

Most backlink audits end in a disavow file. Most of mine do not. Google's own documentation says the tool is for sites that bought links or carry a manual action, and for everyone else filing one removes links that were doing something. Across the last four years I have filed a disavow for about one client in five, and every one of those had either a manual action showing in Search Console or an invoice from a link vendor sitting in their own accounts payable. First question: is anything actually wrong? Three states, three different pieces of work. A manual action appears in Search Console and names its type, which is a documented problem with a defined route out. An algorithmic drop around a spam update appears nowhere, and separating it from a core update, a cannibalised template or a botched migration is done with query and traffic data, not with the link graph. The third state is the common one: a profile that alarms a founder reading a toxicity score and is entirely ordinary to Google, which has been ignoring that kind of link since 2012. What gets examined: The full Search Console links export, which tops out at a thousand linking sites, joined to Ahrefs and Majestic pulls so the scraper and directory noise those tools show and Search Console does not becomes visible. Live status and rel attributes fetched from the linking pages rather than assumed from a database. Anchor text distribution plotted over time, which is where bought links confess: a profile whose anchor shape changes inside a single month was purchased. Wayback captures of linking pages at the date they first appeared. And where the client has changed agency, the previous agency's own reports, which routinely list what was bought. The deliverable: A written decision of three to five pages, addressed to whoever has to defend the spend internally. What happened, what caused the traffic movement, whether a disavow is warranted, and what to do instead when it is not, which is usually link reclamation plus fixing whatever else changed on the same date. If a disavow is warranted you get the file: domain-level lines except where URL level is genuinely right, inside the tool's 100,000-line and 2MB limits, with a written record of why each domain is on the list so the next person to inherit it can take entries off. Not included: I do not send removal request emails to webmasters. They rarely work, they advertise a site's history to strangers, and Google has said for years that removal is not required before disavowing. No toxicity scores, because the number is a vendor's opinion sold as a measurement. No monitoring subscription bolted onto the audit; if you want ongoing watching afterwards that is a separate conversation, and most clients do not need one. Who this is not for: Anyone who wants the file rather than the answer. If the decision to disavow is already made and you need a supplier to produce the document, I will decline, because a disavow filed against a healthy profile can cost traffic in a way that is very hard to see afterwards. Also not for sites under a manual action for thin content or structured data, which is a different problem and a different specialist. What I need to start: Search Console and analytics access, the honest history of what has been bought and by whom, including work done before you joined, and the name of the person who will read the document to the end.
